To reduce the risk of infiltration, most people only knew their part of the operation for the Underground Railroad. "Conductors" transported fugitives from station to station, sometimes pretending to be a slave to enter a plantation. The conductor would direct the slaves North. The Slaves traveled at night, about 10-20 miles to each stations, resting during the day. The stations were often barns, under church floors, in in hiding places in caves and hollowed-out riverbanks.
